September 15, 2005 Calendar Notice October 13-14 Ethnobotany Symposium WHO: Frostburg State University, West Virginia University, The University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute and special featured speakers. WHAT: Ethnobotany Symposium discussing the collaborative efforts on ethnobotanical studies that integrate bioscience with indigenous herbal medicine practices, wildlife habitats, conservation efforts, cottage industries, and economic development for Central Appalachia. WHEN: October 13-14, 2005 from 9:30a.m.-9:00p.m. & 9:00a.m.-12 noon. WHERE: Rocky Gap Lodge and Resort, Cumberland, MD WHY: In the United States alone, medicinal and nutritional herbs are a $4 billion-plus industry; worldwide this figure is at least $20 billion annually. The Appalachian Mountains support a unique and exceptionally diverse flora, including many plants that have a long history of medicinal use. Wild harvesting to meet this continually growing market demand has threatened many of the most important medicinal plants with extinction. In recognition of the need to conserve wild native plants, to scientifically explore and understand their true medical efficacy, and to generate economic benefit for the people of the Appalachian region, the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute and Frostburg State University, in collaboration with West Virginia University, have established the Appalachian Center for Ethnobotanical Studies. REGISTRATION FEE: $52 To view the complete program click on this http://www.umbi.umd.edu/nande/EthnobotanySymposium.html link. Or, contact Alicia Moran at 410-385-6310, or Linda Steele at 301-687-4137. ### Celebrating our 20th anniversary year, UMBI is Maryland's premier biotechnology research institute within the University System of Maryland and was established in 1985.
