Join UMBI’s Board of Visitors

Baltimore, MD - UMBI President Jennie Hunter-Cevera today announced that Senator Lisa Gladden and Delegate Dan Morhaim from Baltimore’s 41st and 11th districts, have agreed to serve as members of the UMBI Board of Visitors, an advisory board designed to provide guidance to the President, staff and faculty. UMBI is Maryland’s premier biotechnology research institute and is part of the University System of Maryland.

“UMBI’s role in education, research and economic development in Maryland is vital to Maryland,” said Delegate Morhaim. “I am impressed with the leadership of UMBI and its commitment to human, marine, plant, and environmental health, and to biotechnological research and growth. As a physician and member of the Maryland General Assembly, I believe this experience will be a unique way to give back to the community and to the State.”

Delegate Dan Morhaim, of Owings Mills, has been a member of the Maryland House of Delegates since January 1995. He is a member of the Health and Government Operations Committee and is chair of the Government Operations Sub-Committee. He is also a member of the Joint Committee on Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review and House Vice-Chair of the Joint Committee on Health Care Delivery and Financing. Delegate Morhaim, originally from California, received his M.D. from New York Medical College in 1975 and is an emergency medicine physician at Sinai Hospital, AND HE served as Chair of Emergency Medicine at Franklin Square Hospital from 1981to 1994. He holds faculty appointments at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Morhaim is Board certified in emergency medicine and internal medicine.

“UMBI’s treatment of AIDS patients in Baltimore, health care education efforts, and K-12 teacher training and bioscience education for Baltimore City students, has been of interest to me for some time,” said Senator Gladden. “I am proud to join the UMBI Board of Visitors and to provide insight and guidance to this unique Maryland institution of research and higher learning.”
Senator Lisa Gladden, of Baltimore, has been a member of the Maryland Senate since January 2003. Previously, she served in the Maryland House of Delegates from January 1999-2003. Senator Gladden is the Assistant Deputy Minority Whip and Member of the Finance Committee, Joint Committee on Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review, and Joint Committee on Welfare Reform, as well as a Member of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland. Senator Gladden also serves as Assistant Public Defender in the Office of Public Defender for Baltimore City. A Baltimore native, Senator Gladden is a graduate of Duke University (A.B. History, 1986); and received her J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1991.
