Baltimore, MD: Andria Apostolou, Dr. Shengyun Fang's graduate student, won the Section award for her oral presentation entitled Silencing the expression of SUPRESIN, an ER stress upregulated protein, increases cell proliferation and sensitizes cells to ER stress-induced cell death at the annual UMB Graduate Research Conference held April 20. She is the third MBC student to win an award at the conference, but the first to win with an oral presentation.
Dr. Fang's laboratory studies protein cycling and related processes. Cancer and many neurodegenerative diseases are caused by defects in these pathways.
UMBI sponsors many students but does not grant degrees to them. The degrees come from sister institutions within the University System of Maryland. Andria, who is enrolled at the University of Maryland Baltimore, expects to finish her Ph.D. in the fall.
