Center of Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology:
UMBI, the University of Maryland College Park, Wye Research Laboratory, and the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development are collaborating to create a cooperative research center on Maryland's Eastern Shore to study agricultural and environmental biotechnologies. Some of the research planned for the Center of Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology include food safety, agricultural waste recycling, and biological inoculants for plants and animals that will eliminate the need for harmful chemical sprays and pesticides. This center will also encompass graduate programs, non-degree-granting professional development programs, technical training at community colleges and course development for inclusion in distance education initiatives as well as educational opportunities for K-12 students interested in learning more about food production in Maryland.

Appalachian Center for Ethnobotanical Studies:
UMBI and Frostburg State University are collaborating on scientific programs to aid Appalachia. UMBI and Frostburg State University, in collaboration with West Virginia University, have established the Appalachian Center for Ethnobotanical Studies in Western Maryland. The Center is an inter-institutional effort devoted to multidisciplinary research, education and conservation programs involving native Appalachian plants with potential medicinal properties. It will also explore the potential economic benefit to the region that may be derived from managed development of botanical resources.
