There are many different ways to support UMBI and its mission. Individuals, Foundations or Corporations interested in making a gift, arranging for an endowment, naming opportunity or partnership may contact Melissa Klem at (240) 314-6337 or klem@umbi.umd.edu with any questions or inquiries.
Kinds of Support
Cash Gift
A gift of cash is the most popular type of charitable gift. A contribution on a credit card can be deducted when the charge is made even though the bill is not paid until a later time. You can also make a gift through an automatic bank draft. To make a cash or credit card donation now to UMBI, please click here.
Matching Gifts
Many corporations have programs to match employee gifts of cash either in whole or in part. In some cases, gifts from spouses, directors and retired employees are matched.
Appreciated Assets
A gift of an appreciated asset to UMBI is a great way to avoid capital gains taxes and benefit future scientific research at the same time. Securities, mutual funds, and certain stocks can be donated in this way. For information regarding ways to do donate an appreciate asset, please contact Melissa Klem at (240) 314-6337 or klem@umbi.umd.edu.
Closely-Held Stocks
Closely-Held stocks can also be donated to UMBI. For further information on how to do this and realize the tax benefits of making a donation with little out-of-pocket expense, please contact Melissa Klem at (240) 314-6337 or klem@umbi.umd.edu.
Real Property
You can contribute real property to the University, either as a bequest or by a lifetime transfer. Gifts of real property can consist of a personal or recreational residence, a farm, commercial building, subdivision lots or any undeveloped parcel of land. UMBI's Shady Grove was made possible through a land gift to the University. For further information regarding the donation of real property, please contact Melissa Klem at (240) 314-6337 or klem@umbi.umd.edu.
Personal Property
A contribution of personal property to the University is generally in the form of equipment or supplies that UMBI needs to purchase or a tangible item that will further the mission and objectives of the University. Examples of personal property which can be accepted are laboratory equipment, TV's, computers, software, audiovisual equipment, items for a silent auction such as athletic or musical event tickets, and automobiles. If you have personal property that you would like to consider donating to UMBI, please contact Melissa Klem at (240) 314-6337 or klem@umbi.umd.edu.
